Ebay assignment 12/22

Write a 1-2 paragraph description of your experience and a 1-2 paragraph analysis that connects your experience of capitalism, through this assignment, to the AWOL.

Well I'm going to be completely honest with my experience : i did not win anything and i got to the point where i didn't want to bid on anything. i was bidding on a pair of Frye [brand] boots that are really expensive in stores so i thought id get a pair on eBay . There was only one available in the style/size i wanted so i bid on it. i had a day and a couple hour and i bid twice , once the night of the assignment and once about a couple hours before it ended. i was planning on bidding once again a couple minutes before the auction ended but the price was too high i wasn't willing to pay that much for USED boots so i gave up .

But i did actually have the pleasure of winning a couple years ago with my sister. it was actually 4 years ago when i first [and last time] bid on something on eBay , my sister and i found this really cute bag that's thousands of dollars in stores for not so much on eBay so we bid and won it . When the bag arrived we realized that they gipped us off and that it was fake and we got pretty pissed and never bought from eBay again :(

There are a couple things i can say about our economy from my two experiences. My first experience reminds me of supply and demand and market prices. It also reminds me of competitiveness of the free market . the fact that there was a free market and that anyone can buy and sell on eBay makes it competitive to get the supply. The reason why i didn't get my supply was because of the other people competing for the same thing. In all situations ,there is the one person who is willing to pay alot of money for the supply while theres always someone (me in this case) who isn't willing to pay above market price and gives up. This experience also reminds me of the WAllmart incident that happened on Black Friday. So many people are fighting for things on sale, they will fight for anything that is cheaper then the original price. So in this case , everyone was fighting for about 70$ off a pair of boots, they where competing for it. While at WAllmart the same thing was happening, everyone was fighting for the items on sale that they even trampled and killed a person!

My second experience made me think of the invisible hand and the free market/competition as well. it reminds me of the invisible hand because the people are selling knockoffs of really expensive brands on eBay and making alot of money off of them . this represents the invisible hand because these people are not even thinking , they automatically think of this strategy to make more money and do it. It also connects to canal street, when there are all the fake purse sellers on the street, it is there automatic actions that leads them to sell fake products to make more profit because they know people wont pay thousands of dollars for something. this also connects to free market because since anyone is allowed to sell and buy in this society , these people are allowed to sell fake products over the internet. Which leads to the competiveness of the "fake purse"sellers online, they all try to do better then one another.THis once again leads to canal street, when you walk down the street you have about 20 chinesse people screaming in your ear to buy a "gucci"bag ,etc. They are all fighting for my attention and competing to get the richest family to buy lots of fake bags.

over all eBay is a good representation of the economy all trapped inside of a computer screen.

part D UPDATED 12/15

1.Given the distinction between a constitutional amendment and a law - if you had the influence how would you amend the constitution?
- If i had the right to change the constitution i don't think i would change anything about it because when you think about it , if there was ANY right you would want to give people or ANY law you could make up to better the country , what would it be? its a pretty hard question because our government has accomplished a lot , and is standing at a good point right now. When you think of America you think that we are falling apart and that we need to do something about , change something, but when i try and think of that one thing to change America, i cant. This relates to in class when Andy asked the students "What's one thing you would change or create to the constitution?" and from what i remember , everyone didn't have an answer. its so hard to create something so serious. Now i had a blurred idea of a law i would like to create , but i don't know how to put it together. It would be something about the poor, making "poor" not exist, making us equal . i just don't know how exactly that could happen , seems impossible :(
something really interesting that actually just happened was that I'm talking to my friend online and i asked her "What would you add to the constitution " and it took her a long time for her to respond and i asked her why is that? and she said well we have everything we need BUT the one think i would change would have to be about homeless people. Which is funny because that's exactly what i said ! This shows that the only problem [us teenagers] think there is left is , homeless people/poor people.

4.What is the general tendency of the Constitution and Amendments in your view - general and steady expansion of human freedom and decency? Reverses and contradictions in no particular direction? Ever increasing betrayal of democratic ideals by corrupt officials? A record of an eternal battle between the evil and good sides of humanity? Explain your fundamental perspective regarding the Constitution and provide a few arguments (including some citations of the Constitution itself) that support your position.

-i would say that the general tendency of the constitution is the fact that through out it all they are trying to make America fair. I feel like the constitution is their last attempt to try and make everyone equal and fair and by doing this they made up a bunch of "law" like articles to it. i would say the biggest example of this would be the Amendments. for example the 13Th amendment stops slavery , the 15Th amendment allowing all colors to vote, and the 19Th amendment allowing woman to vote . these three amendments show that the creators of the constitution where trying to patch up the bad unequal parts about our government and make up these amendments to create peace and equality.
Another conclusion i can make about the constitution is that it does a good job hiding the bad parts of it because until today in class i thought it was all good but then i learned some bad aspects to it, the constitution sure does a good job hiding all the bad parts. For example people tend to speak in our name when its not true . Like when the constitution starts off with "We the People" , it doesn't make sense because WE are the people but are we the people that wrote the constitution and contributed to it? nope! Its also like when we say that WE elected Obama as president, did we underage people vote? nope! its a way of tricking people !

5. How does the Constitution, as amended, create/constrain/shape the American Way of Life?

- i believe that the constitution constructed the way we live overall and that without it America would be like a jungle. Everything would be out of order and without any discipline or structure. the Constitution in one way constructed the AWOL in the way that Americans think of everyone as ONE no matter what color or sex you are, we are all equal . the constitution allowed their to be different parts of the government allowing it to stay organized over the three branches. i think its better that way rather then one ruler ruling all , this way we get more then one opinion before somethings "official". There is one thing though, when i think about the American way of life i think of opportunity , and when you think about it , the constitution is the structure that gave us this opportunity to rise , even though it is failing at the moment , we must be doing something right if the other countries and continents are failing/ were failing way before us?

Part C

Does the 14Th combine with the earlier "no religious test" clause to guarantee a vision of a diverse and equitable society with no government discrimination?

- The fourteenth amendment is a good addition to the amendments because it favored the African Americans. the 14Th amendment allowed African Americans to be part of America and become citizens. it allowed them to be like everyone else and didn't allow segregation to happen. i do believe that it connects to the no religion test because its all about making everyone equal and shouldn't have to go through b.s to be like everyone else. This law was a way to secure the African Americans and to secure others who needed it.

Amendments 12, 13, 14, & 15 are often referred to as a major turning point in US government policy. Explain the importance of these amendments

-i think that these four amendments were such a huge and GOOD change in the US government. Mostly it allowed the African Americas to feel at home and not excluded. its a huge turning point because its when we realized that everyone is equal and that we are all humans, we are all the same, there is no reason to exclude someone because of their skin color. i think that it is such a huge turning point to make slavery illegal because its a turning point for humanity because these things should be recognized as wrong and plain old disgusting to treat a human as an animal. also connects to allowing them vote because once again , we are ONE!

Describe the amendment from the rest of the list (16-27) that you find most significant and make an argument for why we should consider it especially important.

- i would say that the two amendments between 16 and 27 that interest me the most are the 26Th and the 19th amendment. the 26th amendment caught my eye because i think that if you are 18 you should have the right to vote. people may think the opposite but when you think about it , when you are 18 your considered in the working field and a grown up . at that age you should be able to have a say in who your president will be, the person who will control the government. this connects to today and how i am happy my sister got to vote for Obama because when she gets out of college, Obama will be the best thing that can happen to our government because when shes in the working field he will only make it easier for her when it comes to taxes and jobs, etc. so when it comes to the voting age , i say the younger the better because it allows us to choose our future and see how it will be for us . This also all connects to allowing woman to vote [19th amendment] because it now gives us the right to be like everyone else and ever since we were able to work , we should have the right to choose our president!

Part B

Read and paraphrase the “Full Faith & Credit” provision in Article 4. What does that mean for gay marriage? Explain.

In the 4th article it mentions that each state must give credit to acts that take place in all states. it also allows the congress to make rules and laws that show that these acts are followed. Now you may think that the government would be against gay marriage but this article is in the advantage of gay marriage because it mentions that as long as you have a certificate of marriage you are legally married in all states as long as you have it on you. For example if a gay couple were to marry in California , and then move to Texas, it is legal for them to be married in that state as long as you have your certificate aka your "credit". My opinions on this topic, is that i believe that it is right for the congress to create a rule making all couples to have a certificate of evidence because it allows so many opportunities for people to be married around the united states of America.

Article 7: What was necessary for the ratification of the Constitution? Why “Conventions” not “State Legislatures?” Why 9? Does this seem like a fair process to you? Why or why not?

i believe that it was necessary for the ratification of the Constitution because everyone should have a word in the rules that will control their country . if everything was up to one person , without any approval, their would be rules/laws flying left and right being made. this is why the government is split up into 3 different branches, so that at least a good amount of people have a say in a certain topic. Now I'm not that sure why they choose 9 states to ratify the constitution but i believe that number is unfair because if you are going to give the population a word in this situation you might as well give ALL states a chance. i think that it is unfair they they choose those 9 states. i wonder if the votes would be different if they included all states of the united states of America.

Is the 4Th Amendment contradicted by MTA, library, and/or airport searches?

i agree to a point that we should have the best protection possible , esp. now when there it is so easy to have a terrorist attack anywhere in the city . But some times it gets to a point in the MTA systems that doesn't make sense to me. my friend once told me that after a certain amount of people that walk into the subways , the police table will search you without warrant. but what i don't get is that, what are the chances youll catch the terrorist? i think that the MTA questions this search as well as we all do . i do not believe that the airport contradicts this 4Th amendment because as far as i see it they are doing a great job with protecting us after the 9/11 incident, but before that they probably had a problem with the random searches because they obviously weren't doing their job, they needed a wake up call.

Do “lethal injection” and/or the “electric chair” contradict the 8Th amendment? Why/why not?

The action of lethal injection and the electric chair are going 100% against the 8Th amendment because the 8Th amendment mentions " Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." meaning that those actions should not be required when someone is put in jail , but then they go against these rules and kill people within an instant. i don't get what the point of having these amendments if people and institutions will not follow them. in some ways i do agree with the 8Th amendment and in other i disagree with it , i think that if you are in jail for a life sentence you might as well go in the electric chair , but i don't believe in the fact that the jail makes the decision for you , i think it should be up to the prisoner.

PART A : Deeper in the constitution

Preamble:
-" We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defense , promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the Unites States of America."

Paraphrase:
- The people of the United States of America need to do/have these things in order to have a perfect union: have justice (fair/equal), tranquility, protection, promote welfare, and follow the constitution of the United States of America.

What isn't listed? what is a lie or a distortion or spin? Think it through and write down a few ideas, a few skeptical questions.
- as you can see the preamble is all about what one needs to have the "perfect union", well i believe that what they list isn't exactly all that you need. i say this because i think that in order to have a perfect country you need peace , and when you have peace , it doesn't help to have an army . The preamble mentions that you need an army to have protection , but armies only cause war , which causes the opposite of peace. another thing about the constitution i believe isn't what will create a perfect union is the part that mentions justice. i think that if every single person is equal and the same that there wont be competition, everything would be the same, there wouldn't be no "better" because people wouldn't try and get better or create better supplies, i just believe that in order to have a functioning country you have to have competition (not too much though, because then it can get messy). so basically if i were to add a part to the preamble it would defiantly be peace and love, NOT war and hate!

ARTICLES 1-3 of the constitution :
- There are three different branches of the government in order to keep it organized. these three branches are the, executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch.
- The exeutive branch(article 2) is all controlled by the president. the president carries out the laws and recommends new ones. the presidents powers include directing the government, commending the Armed Forces, and dealing with international powers , he/she also is acting as chief law enforcement officer and his weapon is to veto laws!
- the legislative branch(article 2) is controlled by the Congress , which is the house of representative and the senate. What they do is make laws! the powers of the congress is to pass laws, originate spending bills, impeaching officials, declare war, and approve treaties.
-the judicial branch (article 3) is controlled by the supreme court. the powers they withhold are interpreting the constitution, looking over laws, and deciding cases involving states rights.

Questions about the Constitution:
1) what can the congress not do?
2) Who wrote the draft of the constitution?
3) do any of the articals have to do with economics? if so are we going to connect it to our class?
4) what does impeaching officals mean?
5) ARe they still adding on to the constitution?
6) do you believe that one should be born in the USA to become president?why?

Thoughts on Thanksgiving/Black Friday '08

well first off i'd like to share my thanksgiving story of how my family started thanksgiving dinner without us,

well first off we went downstairs to play pool and take pictures while we were waiting for dinner to be done,
about an hour later we go upstairs to check if dinner was ready and i see my father putting dishes in the dishwasher,
i start helping him and then my sister says "wait did you guys eat already?", and my dad freaked out and realized that he forgot to call us upstairs to eat ,... so basically we didn't have a thanksgiving dinner:( but its ok because we still ate all the deserts afterwards!

my thoughts on thanksgiving:
i believe that thanksgiving is about being with your family and a day of thinking of what your thankful for. i don't believe that when a family is around the Thanksgiving table , no one is thinking about all the indians that got killed, we are thinking about everything we are thankful for which is ,in my case, family.

my thoughts on black friday:
- i think that it is disgusting how those stampede of shoppers killed a man at the Wall-Mart black friday sale. i disgusts me because its shows that to those families its so important to get their $800 TV or other things. they don't even care if someone dies, they just want their plasma tv. its as if whenever something is on sale, they HAVE to buy it , even if they don't need it, and because of this "random" buy , they killed someone.
-this connects to what someone's theory is : that people find outside sources to make themselves feel better about themselves. i believe that this is true in many ways, i think that alot of people these days will turn to shopping , or their boyfriend, or medication to make them selves feel good about who they are.
-its like every-time they are bored they have to find something to do or watch, i find this way of living a very american way of living!

MY feelings on the 2008 Election...

so as you can see Obama has won the 2008 presidential elections and is now going to be out new president in 2009 !
i am extremely happy and cannot express my feelings at the moment through words.
All i can mention is that i am/was 100% towards Obama since square one!
in general i was never into politics because i always knew i was under 18 and it never applied to me but for some reason this year it all changed.
I wanted to follow the race as much as i could, i think what drew me closer into it was the fact that it was the first time a colored man , and a woman were running for president.
That fact definitely pulled my attention in !
i never really thought about it until my dad mentioned it but he told me that he voted for Obama FOR ME. because by the time I'm a working woman, Obama will still be my president and that's exact ally the kind of president ill need when I'm a working woman. it will also make America a better place by the time i get older.
which leads to the fact that there is SO much pressure on obama's shoulders at the moment, i keep thinking about how much pressure he must have , trying to fulfil every ones needs that he promised by the new year.
i really do hope him the best in filling in those needs !

another quick thing that i would like to bring up because i will always want to remember this one moment for the rest of my life was when i heard Obama was president on the news, i heard such a rage of noise outside. now my dad lives in union square so right away we took a midnight walk in the streets. it was CRAZY there were millions of nyu students and grown-up , teens, tweens, kids, EVERYONE walking around honking ,screaming, yelling, laughing, i just saw so much joy. it was such a good sight and i really havnt seen anything like it before, it was bigger then a fair or parade it was amazing.
you could really tell that Obama is the most loved man in the country at the moment, i just loved the feeling of joy rushing down the streets ! i wish it was like that every-time i walked down the streets !

BIG PAPER UPDATED 1/2/08

When you look at americans , you can realized that theres definitely an " American Way of Life" you realize that we live a very specific kind of way. its hard to describe but when you analysis different situations such as thanksgiving, christmas, our economy and how it works, the constitution, etc. you notice that we are one of a kind, and not in a good way.

capitalism is broken up into many different parts, but overall what it means is that its "an economical system in which good services are produced , distributed, and consumed though the mechanism of free markets". meaning that its all about how products are bought and sold and the logic behind it . another point to add in would have to be that its all about the "free market" and "private property", meaning that it all depends if its free market and anyone can sell the product , or if its private and you have to have the right to sell the product.
the three main parts of capitalism is : land , labor , and capital . meaning that the land is literally the land that you sell your product on ( aka the store, the street, the grass). the labor is who you choose to MAKE sell the products for you , or the labor that you do to sell the products or to produce your products, and then the capital is the stuff that you use to sell you items like signs, advertisement, and then the wealth comes in !
the wealth is when you get profit from the products you sold and are able to increase your profit by upgrading ! the most fun of it all ! it all turns into a cycle sell, profit, upgrade,MORE profit, sell upgrade, EVEN MORE profit.. etc etc. its a way to get rich !
the main objective of the seller would be to make the most money possible while spending the least amount possible. meaning that he wants to buy the product for a cheap amount of money and make the buyer pay extra , so he gets profit. but then its not all up to him , he always has to relate back to the supply and demand chart. [Photo] the supply and demand chart lets you know the highest price you can sell the item for and the lowest amount of money the buyer will pay for the product, which is the market price. you have to revolve it all around the market price which ends up changing here and there, it all depends on the supply and demand if it shifts or not !
now going a little off topic, theres always going to be competition, if theres a free market, there will be way more competition because you'll have more competitors trying to sell along side of you while if its private , you don't have as much.
thats when the invisible hand comes in! the invisible hand is when you put your own interest ahead of your self so that you do stuff automatically , its kind of like your instincts. people use the invisible hand in these situations because they are competing with others so their first instinct is to do BETTer then their competitors and they do it without thinking about it . if one person is selling a coffee for one price, you sell yours with a donut for the same price etc. its all about the competition!

CAPITALISM!

capitalism is broken up into many different parts, but overall what it means is that its "an economical system in which good services are produced , distributed, and consumed though the mechanism of free markets". meaning that its all about how products are bought and sold and the logic behind it . another point to add in would have to be that its all about the "free market" and "private property", meaning that it all depends if its free market and anyone can sell the product , or if its private and you have to have the right to sell the product.

I, Pencil !!

I, Pencil:
I think that the main message of this story is to express the ideas that this “pencil has. And those ideas are that, when you look at a pencil, you see just a simple writing utensil, but really behind it all, there is SO much work from different workers to complete this one pencil. The pencil wants to make sure that you know how many materials and supplies you need to make such a “seemingly so simple” object that’s part of our everyday life. But then it states, “Not a single person on the face of this earth knows how to make me”. He/she goes into deep detail about the different products within this pencil but the most important part is that for that ONE supply, you have about 5 different processes to get that product. “Consider these miners and those who make their many tools and makers of the paper sacks in which the graphite is shipped and those who make the string that ties the sacks and those who put them aboard ships and those who make the ships” as you see the list goes on and on, about the wood that makes the ships, the people that cut the wood, etc etc. it’s a never ending process for one thing! The “pencil” wants to make sure that you know that “millions of human beings have had a hand in my creation”.
There are two points being made here in this story: that A- the pencil is so simple , but no one can seem to understand it, and then B- that there are millions and millions of people that give their all for the making of this pencil. When you connect the two you realize that people don’t even care about this pencil. It’s a part of our everyday life that we don’t even think about stuff like how’s it’s made and what’s its ingredients? “For each of these millions sees that he can thus exchange his tiny know-how for the good and services he needs or wants”. Which is basically saying that the people who offer the services don’t even care about what they are making or the people who BUY the product don’t really think about all the work that is done behind it. When the pencil makers in the factory are making these pencils and adding the lead and wax, etc they don’t think about how the wax was made and who made it, how and were did it come from? They just do their services and get what they want, MONEY!

AWOL interview essay:FINAL DRAFT

Over the past week in class we have been focusing on what other people think of the “American way of life”. I overall interviewed 4 people and they all had very different answers for all the questions I asked, but the one thing they DID have in common was the fact that they all thought you need a college education to survive in today’s society. I had noticed that when I would go ahead and ask the main question, “ What do YOU think is the American way of life”? All of them would hesitate to answer, because since they were talking to teenagers, they didn’t really want to tell the truth, they just told us stuff we SHOULD hear. But after a lot of follow up questions, we all got the truth out of the interviewees.

The truth was what all four of my interviewees; Tim, Mr. Fanning, Josie Kastleman and a 6th grader said, that to get your American way of life you have to have an education. Josie Kastleman had mentioned that you need this college education because in American, everything is revolved around money, you need it to survive. Well the only way to get money, is through job! So she mentioned that in order to get that job , you have to have a well-off education. Mostly all jobs will NOT hire you with high school education. There is evidence of this through Mr. Fanning’s interview. He told us about his childhood and earlier years and how he was in a rock band and that’s all he had as his career. He was smart enough to make the choice to go to college on the side and mastered in English, even though he thought he was well-off with his rock band and that’s what he wanted to do for his living. At the age of 32 he realized that he couldn’t live his whole life being in a rock band so thanks to his EDUCATION, he became an English teacher then a principle for my high school. At the end of the interview he thanked his mother for always being there for him even though she wanted him to go to law school. Which brings me to another point that is very important to the “American way of life”…
I think that who you become when you get older and which path you choose, all depends on your family. I believe that they have a huge influence on you become. I think that it is very important that you have parents that care about you and are always there for you no matter what because if they aren’t, you may choose a wrong path and who will be there to tell you to turn around? A good example of this would be , Tim. Tim went to a private high school and then a private college. HE mentioned that it would have not happened if it wasn’t for his parents paying and supporting me through my education. Without them he would have not suceded and that where the part of his not getting his “American dream” comes in.

This all overall connects to our unit that the “American way of life is non-negotiable” because it shows that from as many peoples perspectives, it will never change on how you need to survive in today’s society. It will always be the same as for that you need a good education in order to get a good career and earn money, because in today’s world , you need money to survive, without it you’ll be in poverty and wont have much.

Assignment 2:COMMENTS

AMANDA-
hey mandaaaaa,
so i just finished watching your video and i agree with binta , it really showed how your familly and friends mean alot to you . even though it didnt have video it still provoked that feeling and idea.
another thing i realized was that you showed all the pictures of your family members first before anything else and that shows that they maybe mean more then anything to you ?
love youu

BINTA-
so i just wanted to say , nice videoo. and that i really like the part when your sitting down with your sister and you ask her what you value, i like that part because its different then everyone elses where they talk all about them selves, instead you have others talk for you... creative!

ESTHER-
hey esther,
sooo i think that this video really comes across with whats important to you in your life, and i also liked it because it was a little different from everyone elses where it was JUST pics of friends then family , yours had a little more to it !

KAITLYN-
hey , so i just finished watching your video and i think its really cute how most of it is of you and your sisters, seems like thats where you spend most of your time...
also amazing singing!

ALI-
hey
i just finished watching your video and its weird because at the end of it i felt like i really knew you even though we never really talked..
its different then every body elses because you actually talk about every little detail. amazing job !

3 insights from watching videos :

1. that most of the videos i watched was JUST about family and friends, maybe those are the two things teens value the most these days in their life's.
2. that from watching one video you could really feel like you know that one person. it doesnt take much these days to see who a person is..
3. last but not least, that looking at all of our videos , i see that we are all very fortunate to have families and friends that we love and that love us , because alot of teenagers dont have that these days..

MY AWOL VIDEO

MY AWOL VIDEO

DESCRIPTION:
1. What have you included in this video?
-In this video I included three different sections , my family , my friends , and then some daily basics[ the left over pieces of my life]. I included these three things because i tried to think about what i should make this video about , and a brainstorming question i thought of was " what could i not live with out " and thats when i realized that my family is the most important thing to me and so are my friends because without them i know what i would do .

2. Explain how different parts of the video relate to your way of life.
-well the first part of my video [FAMILY] relates to my life because they are the ones that gave me life. i wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. i find them a huge part of my video because my family comes first before anybody , and they ARE my life, they created the way i live.
-the second part of my video [FRIENDS] relate to my way of life because when i think of all of us , we are very different in many ways , we influence each other and sometimes our ways of life can rub off on each other and start becoming similar. They are the ones that create my "outside of family" life. They entertain me and keep me active, if it wasnt for them i would probably be in bed a whole lot !
-the third part of my video [RANDOM PEICES OF LIFE] relate to my way of life because it shows what i do when im alone , not with my family nor my friends. I am usually on my laptop, on facebook or video chatting , which symbolizes that i have to always be in connection to my friends. I also put in a clip of a fashion runway because i always have random activities thrown in the mix of my life that i really enjoy experiencing.

4. What would you have liked to have included, that is important to your way of life, but weren’t able to?
Well overall i think that i was able to show the main point of my video that my life is my family and friends and that they mean alot to me and they are the ones that influance me and created who i am today.

ANALYSIS & INSIGHT
5. What’s going on with your way of life? What seems to be the general pattern or direction or point or situation?
-The direction of my way of life as you can tell from my responses above, i think that the way i live will always be influenced by the people I'm surrounded by.

6. How do the good, bad, and neutral in your way of life fit together?
-Well i would say that my life is all about the good and neutral , i would never say bad things happen in my life because you always have to think about the unfortunate people and families out there in this world that have less then me , and that makes me feel like i have an amazing life and that nothing can really put me down, that nothing can ever get to me as "omg my life is horrible ! " .

7. Does your way of life seem like a “typical American Way of Life”? Why or why not?
- Sadly i would say definitely. i say yes because even though my parents are separated , we are a loving family with animals and a sister. and we travel on vacations. and when it comes to me, i am on facebook a lot, watching stupid american shows, communicate with my friends by phone , AIM ,and even video chat. to me that is what americans do , they are revolved around the media system and technology.

8. What aspects of your way of life seem really interesting to you – you’d like to think about them more deeply, figure out how this sort of thing developed historically, what’s going to happen to this aspect of your way of life within your lifetime? What questions do you have about these really interesting aspects of your way of life?
- I would say the most intereesting part of my life would have to be the fact that i have traveled alot for only being 17 years old. Since i have grown up with parents that love to travel and see the world, i beleive i will be the same as the years go by , my next destination that i want to go to would have to be Africa, my mom and i plan on going there for a month to help out next summer.

Personal Revelation Essay

Everyone has had a revelation in there lifetime, half of the people don’t even know it, or realize it. This revelation helps the individual see the world, society, everyone, in a different way. It helps them understand in an easier way how the world works, why everything is the way it is.
I have had many revelations I’m sure; I just haven’t realized them yet. There is one revelation I have had very recently. This revelation happens a lot I’m sure to many different people. It has to do with Karma. I used to think that karma was just a “saying” that it doesn’t really exist. I used to think it was impossible for someone to be looking over you, and looking at everything bad that you do, and make sure karma hits you back hard.
The “karma string of events” experience that I experienced started last year [I’m not going to use names because I don’t want to reveal anything to anyone]. It started off with a relationship I had with someone and it lasted about 7 months, and towards the end of our relationship I had done something bad, but didn’t tell him, I did it behind his back. Then about a month later I find out that around the same time he had cheated on me [karma towards me]. Then we broke up, and he went out with the girl that he cheated on me with. The next thing that happened was he cheated on her later in their relationship, which results in karma on her. Now he’s the one that is left to have karma hit him back.
This experience was a revelation for me because it opened my eyes and made me realized that karma does exist. It makes me think so much every time I think about it. It makes me think about how does karma work? I’m sure that when I figure out this question, that’s when I will get the REAL revelation. But for now it just surprised me that even if the person you did something bad, doesn’t know, you will STILL have something bad happen to you. It makes me feel like someone is watching over me all the time.
This revelation was definitely a hard/mean one to experience, because I was hurt while experiencing it. The result is definitely tragic, because I got hurt in the end, but it can also be looked at as positive because now that I know karma exists, I will watch my actions because I know that whatever I do will always come back to me in some sort of way.
Like i said above, revaltions make people see the way the world works. this revalalation of karma did make me understand the way things are. it made me realize that when something bad happens to someone , that it wasnt a mistake, that theres always going to be a reason behind it all. THat that thing happened because that person did something bad before in an eairlier time, and now its all hitting them in the face.

MY STORY- final draft!

It was not until i turn 16 that i decided to find my mother. I didn't know why i waited so long, maybe because there was a reason why we were meant to be apart. It was when i found the letter that arrived to me about a year late, that made me want to see her. it had a return address of some small town in Montana.

I ran down the streets of the city looking for somebody, anybody. i reached towards her shoulder and grasped it hard, shocking her , dropping her purse. i grabbed it with out even blinking or thinking, ran faster then ever towards an ally , where she couldn't find me. It was then that i saw the 100$ laying in her wallet , calling out to me, telling me that i have enough money now to take a train up to Montana.

I was walking down the streets of this small town not knowing where to go next. i looked up at the house numbers waiting until i reached 225. it wasnt until 30 minutes later that i reached the abandoned looking house. my feet were covered in dust, water driping down my forehead. i was nearvous, what would my mom think when she sees me, when she finds out im sick of doing too much drugs, when i tell her im homeless, that i steal? i was scared.

i rang the door bell, no answer. rang again, no answer. The next door neighbor started yelling at me to leave, theres no point of trying, that no one lived there any more. i started walking up her lown. i needed to know more, i didnt just travel a day to come to no one.

She invited me in for some tea, i accepted even though I'm not much of a tea drinker. Her name was Madison, and had buitiful strawberry blonde hair, i wondered if my mom looked like her aswell. We sat and talked for awhile until she felt confterble enough to tell me the truth, that she died. The truth hurt so bad, i didnt know how to react. i was shocked, i wanted to be upset , but it was hard, i only knew her for what, a 4th of my life? it was hard to sit there and be mortified and remember our memories together, but we didnt have any, or at least i didnt remember.

The door bell inturupted us, Madison excused herself and opened the door, standing on the other side was a boy about my age and an older man. She gave a kiss to each, and they all laughed with joy. She brought them over towards me , and introduced them " This is my son Jacob , and my husband John". This wasnt exactally what i wanted to hear at the moment , i was in a moment where i wanted my family , and not to see some other perfect one. i smiled and asked to use the bathroom , Madison pointed me in the direction upstairs.

As i was walking towards the stairs, i heard them whispering... mostly about me i guessed. the first door to my right up the stairs was their room, i could tell, the lace white window drapes, and bedding that look like it belonged to a grandma. i walked in trying to stop myself, trying to leave my past behind, but i couldnt , i stole something. it was a little white handkerchief that i could tell was old. i tend to take things that are nothing, but mean alot to that person. i dont know why, maybe because i want to get a feel about the person, see who they are.

NOTE: That was my introduction to my story , i know that i could write on forever but this is something i need alot of time to write , so instead of writing a million pages, for the rest of the story im going to outline it out in detail, what happens next, why, etc.

- Scene 1-3 = Everything above written [ 1- doorstep, neighbor calling in, 2-talk over tea, the truth, 3- introduction to family, stolen handkerchief]

-Scene 4= Goes back downstairs, the family offer to drive him to the train station so that he can make the next train. He tells them that he doesnt have enough money , that he thought he was coming here to live with his mother. They invite him to stay at the house, in the guest house until he finds a way to get money, job etc.

-Scene 5= Jacob sets up bed,etc in guest house for Chris (the boy). They end up talking about Chris's lifestyle vs. Jacobs, they realize how different they are. Jacob is easily amused by how Chris is such a "bad boy" and is jelous in a way . at the end of the night you can tell that they like eachother alot and enjoy eachothers company, become friends off the bat.

-Scene 6= Father takes Chris to the local diner to be a bus boy, make some cash for the train. He never worked in his life, always stole money, so big change for him. He starts right there on the spot. and everyone looks at him like hes some weird creature, he feels unconfortable and runs out.

-Scene 7= He runs out and starts walking and ends up on this open feild. He lays down and just stares at sky thinking. a couple hours later the father comes and finds him , telling him that he got a call from the diner saying that he left in a rush. They sit and talk , Chris doesnt know how John got his life story out of him but he does. Chris feels releaved because no one ever asked about his life, it was a good way to just pour out everything. John talks to Chris about staying for the whole summer that it might teach him lessons.

-Scene 8= At night hangs out with Jacob and all this friends, they all dont beleive he can do all this bad stuff, they walk down street and ask for him to break in to a car, he does it they are all facinated. they ask him to break in a house he says no. Jacob starts wanting the attention too , he starts to try and be bad, from being this perfect little boy.

-Scene 9= Mom gets pissed that her son [Jacobs] turning into a bad boy, she wants Chris to move out but the father disagrees and fights with mom .

-Scene 9= Chris feels bad he runs away, he doesnt want to cause all this trouble for the family, he realized the damage he did on Jacob.

-Scene 10= THe father finds him at the train station about to sneak onto the train without paying, but he tells him to come back home , that its his house now. that he needs the help of a family with him , that thats what hes missing in life.

-Scene 11= Chris comes back home and gets the job back and starts wearign all new clothes, treatign the mother wih respect, not teachign JAcob any more bad things, etc.

THE END .

MY STORYYYY-draft 1

big revelation trope essay draft 4

This semester we are basing out class around Revelations. In my opinion , a Revelation is something that causes a change in someone, a slogan that you live by. its a new insight that changes the world and how you see it. in some cases, its something that has been covered from the "divine". Some examples that i came up with about Revelations is; experiencing death, childbirth,Martin Luther king, and many more.

A Revelation that i experienced is... when my dad found out that he had skin cancer, it changed everything. the doctors told him that theres a huge chance that i am immune to get it too if I'm in the sun too much. so it changed the way i see my dad and the way that i am when i go to tropical places, or anywhere with sun. this changed my life , and the way i see things.

In most Revelation stories, theres a Trope. A trope is the element in a story that creates the story...it sets the tone... something the repeats itself. Some elements that build up for a Revelation trope are; the reveler, the leader, the profit, the dumb masses...aka silent majority, the oppressor, the oppressive situation, the obstacles to the Revelation, the message, ETC. For example , in a movie Foxfire we saw a clip in class, and in this movie, Rita is the "silent one", she doesn't speak up for herself, shes the typical silent person that most movies have. Some other movies that have Revelation tropes are; Notes from Underground, Matrix, 1984, The Odyssey, Breakfast Club, most Disney movies, ETC.

Something that i would like to quote is, Andy's version of the key element of a Revelation trope... " the ignorant are in a unacceptable/oppressive situation when a prophet/reveler tries to share the message that connects the dots in a new way and offers a vision of a redeemed world but there is an opposition to the message/prophet drama occurs." I like this because it sets out everything and the elements in a Revelation trope in a simple way..that i can understand it .

RANDOM THOUGHT: In class when we talk about Revelations and tropes, its so weird to think about it. its weird to think about it because it makes it feel like the worlds changing so much and so fast. it makes it feel like that in a couple years who knows where we'll be. it feels like theres so many different Revelations popping up that slowing changes the way people view the world. i just hope that everything wont get TOO out of hand !

One thing that i noticed about profits , is that they are usually attractive, or look different, catches someones eye. i think they make the profits like this in movies and books, etc . because in real life, most people wouldn't exactly look up to an un-attractive normal person. [ as rude as that sounds ... its true :/ ]

I think that i look at the Revelation in THE MATRIX a little differently then others. i think that the Revelation in this movie , is just overall how Neo has to make the biggest decisions on his own . the fact that he had to pick either one or the other pills, which would change the way he saw EVERYTHINg in his life, was a huge decision that he had to make. Just watching him make that decision kind of made a Revelation in my mind. that part of the movie stood out to me because i tried to put myself in his shoes, and think "what would i do", to tell you the truth , i have no idea what i would do , i would be in a very difficult position. It made me realize that everyone around you are giving you SO MANY different opportunities to you, they are opening so many doors for myself, but i don't do anything about it, i don't make action . this reminds me of a quote in the MATRIX " I'm trying to free your mind from you, I'm showing you the door but you have to walk through it ...." this fits perfectly with the situation because hes giving him an opportunity but YOUR the one that has to take it in and walk through the door !

Another connection i made to Revelation tropes, is to the book THE WAVE. This book about a small town school, in this school theres a teacher that decides that he wants to do an experiment since the kids don't get the whole Nazi era. This experiment was called the wave, and it ended up going wrong. all the kids in this cult group named THE WAVE became like Nazi's and didn't know their way out. This story is a Revelation because everyone thought that its impossible to start a cult group as bad as the Nazi's , that it wouldn't repeat its self in history. But in the end, it did happen and everyone was shocked ! it was definitely a Revelation to everyone in the story, and even to me because it scared me , that it can actually happen , it was very realistic! in this book , Ben is Profit/Leader, Robert Billings is the silent masses/Outcast, Laurie is the popular one, and the rest of the school is the followers. I mention this because it shows that in most books its like this, theres the different characters and where they stand in the book, and most of the time is always the same!

In the famous story "Emperor's New Clothes" , its about this emperor who needs this amazing new suit of clothes made for him . These tailors tell him that " it is invisible to anyone who is too stupid and incompetent to appreciate its quality". They are talking about the fabrics of the clothes, if you cant see them , your stupid. So the emperor goes out to greet everyone, and he is naked. Only one little boy says something. he screams out saying "the emperor is naked! ". And that's when the Revelation starts. This was a Revelation for the emperor because he realized in the end how stupid he was , and that he couldn't believe that he believed those tailors. This story opens up my eyes , and makes me realize that there are so many people that wont say anything, if its out of their place, or makes them look stupid. they would rather keep quite that save someone from embarrassment or maybe something even worse.

MY 1st REVELATION STORY IDEA (not final one..scroll down for final one):
In class you asked us ; what Revelation story would make a good film? so we thought of different ideas. at first i thought that the story of The Wave would make an interesting movie, but then when i thought about it , its so chiche to make a movie about teachers and students, i wanted something different. i have another story in mind, but I'm not sure what exactly the Revelation is going to be and the profit, but its definitely a story that would open up teenager's eyes. the story is about this small suburban high school, with the jocks and teenagers, and all the clicks. in the story there is this one guy who is the most popular of them all, and is a huge player. It turns out that he has HIV , but doesn't tell anyone . he continues to have sex with all the girls in the school , and gets away with it all . in the end the girls in the school come to find out that they had gotten HIV, and then that's where i am at . like as i said, I'm not sure what the Revelation is , but if i saw a movie like this it would really open my eyes and change the way i see things. because i feel that so many people these days are getting diseases and dieing at very young ages, sooner or later every ones going to catch something from someone , then we are going to pass it on to our children, and everyone will be dieing at the age of 20 . i think that's a Revelation right there.

MY FINAL REVELATION STORY :
here are some notes on my final story.
- its going to be about a troubled boy coming from New York City and goes to a small town in Montana to find his mother but finds out that she died years ago.
- spends the nights sleeping in the town because he came with out money to go back home.
- gets taken in by the "perfect" family , he learns alot from them.
- the father of the family is the prophet , teaches this troubled boy alot.
- their son also learns alot from troubled boy, that life's not always supposed to be perfect.
- son turns out to be a little troubled himself. learns bad from the boy
- troubled boy learns alot and turns out to be a good boy, learns alot about life.
- fathers prophet by spending a day together, talk alot, ask questions,
- i think that my story will be a sneaking revalation because since hes a "bad" boy this idea of him turning good sneaks upon him but he really doesnt take it in.
- prophecy- "WE ARE ALL ONE" . this message is going to be sent by the father . telling the boy that even if you homeless and we are rich, we are still one. you can become like me, we are all capable to be a better person.

"WE SLEEP,THEY LIVE"
--In class we watched a movie called "They Live", and it had the prophecy of "we are all one" , in this case that all colors are one.
-- the trope in this movie is about the homeless people that the society's trying to put down. that they are put last AFTER everyone else. this trope reminds me of "The Matrix" because they are similar in the since that its "THEM" against "EVERYONE ELSE". [ "NEO" against the "WORLD".... "HOMELESS" against "EVERYONE ELSE IN SOCIETY"].
--in the movie the sunglasses reveal the truth, which is the revalation. When you look through the glasses everyone looks black, meaning every ones one.
-- one thing that i realized while watching this movie and the matrix is that right before the person has its Revelation, , they freak out. Neo threw up in the matrix, and the man in "they live" killed all the police.
-- the American flag being hung everywhere in the scenes i think connects back to the fact that every ones one. they keep on wanting to remind everyone that they all live in ONE country and that even if your Spanish, french , etc. that you are all AMERICAN because you in AMERICA now , not Mexico, France, Brazil, etc.
-- in the movie whenever the character would take off the glasses it would hurt. it shows that Revelations are thrilling but once you take it off, stop it, its hard and rough to go back to your old life, your everyday life before you realized this Revelation.

A TROPE:

* THE AWAKE VS. THE ASLEEP
*THE AWAKE= the people who are aware of whats going on , they know "whats up"
*THE ASLEEP= the people who are clueless about whats going on. they don't know "whats up".
* In "They Live" the people that are asleep are the people of the town...everyone that doesn't know about the glasses, the truth, are asleep. Then the people that are awake are the ones who use the glasses, that know the revelation.
* there are the masses that slowly increase in awakeness as everyone helps them realize the "truth". its not always just the prophet who gets everyone to realized this revalation!

To connect this to another story... in the WAVE, i thought the awake was the girl and the asleep was the whole school including the prophet; Ben. they were all asleep cause they all didn't realize that this experiment was like the Nazi's. And this girl was the only one against it.

JAIL MOVIE/GEORGE CARLIN:

Jail Movie--> In this jail movie that Andy showed us in class, There is a prisioner that is a comeidian and jokes about life. the one thing that he said that was the revelation was ; " its a new millinium". it kind of remindes me that one person can go into jail one year and not know what its like on the outside decades later. Hes stuck in the year that he arrived at jail in.

George Carlin--> George Carlin is a comedian that mocks America and the society. The quote that he said that stood out to me was ; " life is worth loosing". His message is that America's nice but we have these flaws. Some of these flaws is that America is like one BIG shopping mall, and every ones overweight. Everyone just shops and eats, and the one place where they have that 2-in-1 is a shopping mall, which in Carlin's words "is America". Carlin makes it funny by relating it to the way people act and even the way i act. its like a reality check , but in a hilarious way somehow. It like people are living this life that they don't even realize, and then theres the people like George Carlin that actually TALKS about their lives, and its shocking, you have no other way to react but to laugh, even ifs its the sad truth.

To connect this to another story... in the WAVE the awake i thought was the girl and the asleep was the whole school including the prophet; Ben. they were all asleep cause they all didn't realize that this experiment was like the Nazi's. And this girl was the only one against it.

Live Prophet Essay

Now we've seen all of these prophets within all of these movies and books, so now its time for my to evaluate my own life, and figure out who's MY prophet.
I would say that my prophet is; Andy in last semesters class. Last semester was when we were doing the “ Insight Into Daily Life” unit, and that's when I realized that he was a prophet in my eyes.
After taking this class I changed so many different things about myself for the better. This class made me realize so many things about myself, and I wouldn't be able to do that with out Andy's help and lessons, which is why I think of him as a prophet. I also believe that I had a “mini” revelation while taking this class. I don't exactly know how to describe what the revelation was but it just changed the way that I interacted with others. It was a revelation to me because I realized that, thanks to this class, the way I interact with others could change the rest of my life. Like for when I go to college I know have skills to take with me to interact with others, I now know how to be a good listener and give good feed back which will lead to having many friends in college. And that its self I think is a revelation for myself because I think friends is a very important aspect in life. I also think that in order to succeed in life you need to have good communication skills. And now I know that I have all of these skills, thanks to Andy. I also believe that Andy is a live prophet for many of his students.
In our situation I would say that Andy is the “teacher/leader” type of prophet, and that I am the silent mass, I am the quite student that doesn't say much. In my situation I don't talk as much, I just take in everything that he teaches us and take it further by using it in my daily life.

revalations class . draft 2

Some elements that build up for a revalation trope are; the reveler, the leader, the profit, the dumb masses...aka silent majority, the oppressor, the oppressive situation, the obstacles to the Revelation, the message, ETC.

My Contribution to the Class..

in our Insight Into Daily Life, i have contributed by writing three different comments on peoeple in our classes blogs. those three people are ; michelle s., terrance, and sharon. what i did in my comments is let them know what they did good and bad. i also related to all of their papers because it ended up that i had alot in common with what they had to say!.

TERRANCE'S COMMENT I WROTE: "this essay is very good i agree with a couple of things. the first thing is how they restrict so many diffeernt things in schools. like for example if mr.fanning was to walk by our class when andys teaching us a massage, im sure he would quesiton it and think..this isnt right...so i agree with that. i also agree alot with the fact that you mentioned about girls being able to hold hands and kiss on the check while if guys do that...they would get made fun of so much. i think its weird, i even think its weird that girls have to have that kiss on the cheek everyy time we see eachother, its kind of annoying.
but overall this mini essay is very good!"

SHARRON'S COMMENT I WROTE: "like like this essay beacuse it was very easy to read in general. i liked how you seperated everything into lil' chunks, this way it didnt bore me. as i was reading i was able to relate to you because most of what you wrote was so true for myself also . i agree with the thing where you dont open up as much with people who you dont really knwo because you dont want them knowing your life all at once, and who knows they might use it agaisnt you.
i also found in common with you , the fact that you said you were shy and dont talk as much, im the same exact way i tend to stay quite allthe time. well overall nice essay and points!"

MICHELLE S'S COMMENT I WROTE:"i think that this intro is very good and intreging! you should keep up the work and get to the body paragraphs.
but i do agree with waht you said about not putting the more important things in front of you , like i usually end up hanging out with friends in an apt. instead of going on the grass in central park.
but overall, you should keep up the good work and get past the introduction! good luck!!"

OTHER COMMENTS:i am very quite in class and try to contribute but im shy. im going to work on that though for next semester!
